Media RelationsWashington auction Harley Davidson motorbike
Kamino International, logistics and fulfilment specialists since 1969 were awarded a Harley-Davidson motorbike, the winning prize of a loyalty promotion program by a major international airline.
Michael McGlaughlin, manager of Kamino's Washington facility, was presented with the bright yellow Harley-Davidson Sportster XL883C and deliberated on the best way to share this prize. Michael suggested the bike be auctioned to the highest bidder and Kamino would donate the proceeds to charity.
Michael commented “In today's world it was fun to first win such a grand prize promotion but then came the reality of what to do with a brand new Harley-Davidson? It was obvious we could not use it or keep it so the decision quickly became how we can put this to “Good Use” knowing Kamino already supports many charities. ”
After some consideration, it was decided to auction the bike on the eBay Giving Works website, as this would give the most coverage for this project and Kamino chose to donate the entire final sale price to a non profit organisation.
Kamino's chairman, Klaus Kretschmer, requested that a children's charity should benefit and Save the Children USA was chosen, as this is the leading independent organization creating real and lasting change for children in need in the United States and around the world.
An email detailing the auction was sent out to all Kamino employees, agents and customers in the USA, so everyone would have a chance to bid. The bike was auctioned with no reserve and a starting bid of $1.00, so everyone watched anxiously as the bidding gathered pace. It soon became clear that a healthy amount would be raised and after 10 days of hectic bidding, Jeff Palmer from York Pennsylvania collected the bike for the exceptional price of $6850, which has duly been donated to Save the Children USA.
Kamino are delighted with the outcome of the auction and if the opportunity arises, would gladly look at using this medium for raising money for charity again.
